This is a pre-war shot3 of Ashburnham Grove. There are three things worth mentioning . Firstly, the railings are all exactly the same (not so now). This was before (I guess) they were given to the war effort. Secondly, you can just see a tall building on the left hand side of the road at the top. This was the end of Ashburnham Terrace - the terrace that went between Ashburnham Grove and Place, on Greenwich South Street. This terrace was bombed beyond repair in the war. Finally, just on the right you can see the original three houses - again these were lost to a bomb but subsequently re-built in fine pastiche styling (you would never guess on first sight that they are not the original).

i do find reeding and wrighting and speeking 'Hungarian' all these years has really messed my anglo saxon grasp of direction up!! :(
Thanks for posting these pics and info.
I was born and lived in Ashburnham Grove for many years. We lived at 40a down the "area" or aree (airey) for slang. My family is the White family and Im almost sure my mum Pat White knew Nell Hawkins very well. We moved out in the late 60's to Swindon to better new housing. I to remember the prefabs but they have gone now. I remenber the Philpotts, the Lords and Hedgers all from this street. We spent alot of time in Deptford, Albury Street, now thats a place for history that needs investigation.
Thanks
Andy
